The first recorded deed for the land was on March 26, 1833 and was bought by Christian Barrens. The first time the homestead is mentioned in the records is when it was sold to John Weaver on August 20, 1856, which leads us to believe the original house was most likely built sometime in the 1850's.
The main house is log chinked. Other areas, such as the kitchen, dining room and bathroom/laundry room were added in 1926.
The Bryan family owned the property from 1907 until 2001. The the last of the Bryan family to own this special place was Jim and Lucy (Bryan) Elders. Lucy and her brother Francis were gifted the property by their parents in 1974. When the original canning house went into a state of disrepair, Jim replaced it with the current cottage in 1985. He was a Building Trades teacher, and made a lot of improvements to the property while they owned it.
In fall of 2023, the Bryans once again donned the doorstep of the house. Jim and Lucy, as well as their daughters and husbands, were able to see how the house had changed, and how it had remained the same. We sat down with them to find out what they remembered about the history. It was a very special evening together!
Bob and Joy Henschen purchased the property from the Bryan family in 2001 and opened it as an Inn from 2002 to 2016. They loved being a part of its history as well and made many improvements, including the concrete bridges over the water and the spring house in the back of the property.
We are pleased to re-open this historic home as an "Inn" once more. We believe this home is meant to have people in it, and are happy to be the ones to carry on that tradition for many families to come!
